The story of Ladurée begins in 1862, when Louis-Ernest Ladurée opened a bakery near the Madeleine in Paris. What started as a humble pastry shop would soon become an icon of French elegance. During the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, Jeanne Souchard, the wife of Ernest Ladurée, revolutionized the dining scene by combining coffee and pastries, creating the French-style tearoom. Her innovation provided a space where women could gather freely, marking the birth of an institution that would forever change Parisian café culture.
In 1930, a visionary Ladurée pastry chef transformed the classic macaron—once a simple, crunchy shell dating back to the Middle Ages—into what we now know as the Parisian macaron. He created the iconic sweet that would become world-famous by joining two delicate almond meringue shells with a ganache filling. Over the past decades, Ladurée has expanded beyond France, opening tearooms across the globe while remaining a symbol of French art de vivre. The brand gained international fame thanks to Sofia Coppola’s film Marie Antoinette, where the queen and her court were depicted eating Ladurée’s macarons—further cementing its status as a luxury treat fit for royalty.
With over 150 years of history, Ladurée has become an institution, making teatime at its elegant salons an unmissable experience for travelers visiting Paris.
